Indicators make application for the GNOME panel applets forgotten
Filed under: News;No Comments
The new desktop shell of Ubuntu waived all know the famous GNOME panel. Thus there are fewer opportunities to set up his desktop individually. Additional applets such as a system monitor can no longer add to the panel. And some programs no longer appear as an icon in the notification area of the panel, as this allows only a few programs there, store their icon.As an alternative to forced Canonical Ubuntu for some time to switch to so-called Application Indicators, which are slowly becoming more popular and even now already offer many opportunities to replace the old panel applets.View
All the above mentioned programs use the “Application Indicators”. For the user this means ultimately only now that all these programs can be started from the normal application menu or the new Dash of Unity. Instead of opening an application window, these programs, however, a nest only in the panel. For these programs, then the next time you start to download automatically this usually put an automatic entry in the session management. Alternatively, some of the programs is an option in the settings so that the app starts automatically in the future.

Radio tray
Radio tray in this blog I already have a couple of times treated. I find the program very convenient because you can comfortably without consuming music management program like Banshee or Rhytmbox access to his favorite stations. Has
Unfortunately
Radio Tray is a pure “Notification Area” program. I.e. the application has no real program window, but nests exclusively in the tray, which allows even at Unity is known only to a few applications where it will display an icon. Eugene San has now modified sowei radio tray that as an Indicator applet again finds a place in the panel.

Because of this PPA has many packages, I would disable it after installation on every case again.

Stack Applet
The stack applet you can track your activities on stack exchange. You get displayed when there are new posts and you can quickly and easily access the appropriate page. The applet is available for Ubuntu Maverick in the repositories, therefore forego the naming of a PPA.
Pastie
Pastie is another clipboard manager. Ultimately, he does not stand on its competitors. Who will search for a program that would be best once: all, and then take your pick of his personal favorites. The program is also in the sources, hence the most convenient way is again a PPA.
$ Sudo apt-add-repository ppa: hel-sheep/pastie$ Sudo apt-get update & & sudo apt-get install pastie
Diodon
Another
Clipboard Manager. Diodon is – according to self-promotion – very lightweight for the clipboard manager who wants to integrate itself as much as possible in the GNOME and GTK + desktop. However, I can see over the other clipboard managers are not a unique feature. Installation is now possible only through the PPA, the developer.
$ Sudo apt-add-repository ppa: diodon-team/stable$ Sudo apt-get update & & sudo apt-get install diodon
Clipper
I'll write a bit tired of clipboard manager. Glipper cache, another clipboard manager, which processes the contents of the clipboard via copy & paste several leaves. The biggest advantage of Clipper is possible that the program has long been represented in the repositories of Ubuntu, and does not require a PPA for the installation.
CLIPit
And yet a clipboard manager … CLIPIt is a fork of the already long known Parcellite Clipboard manager. In addition to various improvements and bug fixes, just support for the indicator-applet is installed. Because the program is not yet represented in the repositories, CLIPIt must be installed on a PPA.
