    [UPDATE] If OTR for Empathy?

    Filed under: Thoughts;

    In the post with 2:32 Empathy Audio-/Videochats via MSN came to the question of whether and when Empathy would support because of OTR-encrypted messaging chats. The answer to this question has unfortunately not yet changed: No, OTR, there is not yet so far for Empathy. But still there are updates to this topic, because it looks like the position by Telepathy has probably changed.

    Date was the statement of Telepathy that you prefer the jingle encryption protocol implemented by oneself, instead of setting an encrypted layer to the protocol itself. But in the context of the contribution of Danny O'Brien on privacy, encryption, and the desktop, Robert McQueen of Collabora clear in the comments, that was willing to implement OTR directly in Telepathy.

    We adjusted our plans to allow Therefore both the XMPP and OTR encryption style to be presented through a similar Telepathy API.

    So that you're waiting for someone from the Empathy / Telepathy community will like the work. Itself would be enough resources left over, but you want to support third-party developers could. Sounds unfortunately not really look as if you really interested Bug # 545 347 would have to close quickly.

    [UPDATE 01/03/2011] I've just discovered the bug tracker of Telepathy that the implementation of OTR in Telepathy and Empathy is thus carried out in.

    Work towards patching this bug has begun, the Telepathy developers and myself are working towards a specification that will define how OTR will interact and be built into Telepathy. Once the specification is complete we will begin the process of programming OTR into Telepathy. Regular updates will be made via the Telepathy mailing list, and a monthly summary will be posted to https://bugs.launchpad.net/libtelepathy/+bug/296867

    Following the bugs, so you end up with so far only about specifications, yet nothing seems to be to try out. Nevertheless, so long will it take any more until this much-criticized chapter is closed. [/ UPDATE]
