Unity at 11:04 as the standard Ubuntu desktop??
The Ubuntu Developer Summit, to be placed in its course for the April 2011 published version of Ubuntu, Mark Shuttleworth has announced the most controversial decision in the future to Ubuntu. 11:04 Ubuntu is – at least according to the plan – Unity as desktop environment. Unity is only so far in the Ubuntu Netbook Editon used, but with Natty Unity will now replace the GNOME desktop as the desktop environment of Ubuntu.View
Unity is a proprietary development from Canonical for the netbook version of Ubuntu. Unity does not know who yet, which is on YouTube a video that introduces the latest version quite dynamic.
My experience on my Lenovo S12 was pretty sobering, however. Unity was so slow and unusable that I have installed later rather quickly, the “normal” GNOME. The concept could not really convince me, too often I missed the normal GNOME GUI.
In any case, I am sometimes curious how the whole develops now. Maverick has not disappointed me as the OS, but something “new” features 10:10 no Ubuntu. Users who are satisfied with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid can stay with Lucid, without missing a beat. By Natty will therefore probably be really exciting.
Currently the keynote speech by Mark Shuttleworth is still running. Whoever wants to can watch the speech live at video.ubuntu.com. However, the end of the talk is already in sight.
[UPDATE] time, a small clarification: As before, you will be able to use an Ubuntu with the “original” GNOME interface. GNOME is in the repositories and installed separately and can be selected during login. I can also imagine that there will be an Ubuntu GNOME Edition, which is then made the usual GNOME installation. You should not demonize the same Ubuntu. The cookie is not eaten, he is not even baked. [/ UPDATE]
