Canonical does support strategy for Firefox
Filed under: Other;No Comments
Until now it was so common in Ubuntu, which was after the release of Ubuntu version no longer changes to the package sources. Only essential bug fixes or security updates have been distributed through the update and security sources. For the Mozilla products, this meant that only so-called minor updates such as recorded was an update from Firefox 3.0.x to Firefox 3.0.x +1 in the sources. A major update as of Firefox 3.5 to Firefox 3.6, however, was never carried out.View
Canonical wants the users such a stable environment – please stable in the sense of “here, nothing changes” – guaranteed. Corporate customers enjoy this stability, home users, however, especially switching from a certain system from Redmond, but are usually a bit confused why her beloved Firefox will not update automatically.
This will probably change in future, at least in terms of the Firefox browser. How to Let's test Ubuntu NOW! Blog and the Ubuntu-devel mailing list was announced, the current in the Firefox update sources yet support all versions of Ubuntu are recorded. The reason not is because you now want to make Ubuntu a rolling release distribution, but the fact that Mozilla itself, the release screw rotates faster and faster.
Mozilla wants to publish in future minor release in 4-6 weeks time and major releases in the rhythm of 4-6 months, it will automatically support the older versions will not get security updates. Canonical for that would mean, for example, with respect to Ubuntu, that would be patched up after a few months, all Fire foxes in all Ubuntu versions by hand. This work would probably save you.
Who wants to participate in the tests for it, information can be found in the aforementioned blog post as well as on the mailing list. It begins with Ubuntu Hardy, the other Ubuntu versions will follow later.
