A few weeks ago was the Ubuntu laptop Satchbook of rocking at my guest. Unfortunately, the time is currently a bit short with me, from there, you had to wait a little longer on the report and the other is the post in my blog about the device is slightly shorter. Does not matter, because the Linux community, there is the contribution that I've written for the Linux User 11/2011 to read fully online.As such I can in good conscience here is a bit more brief and get straight to the point.

View

From the installed hardware

Ago, you can make more rock not blame that one would save. A recent Intel Core i5-2410M at 2.3 GHz to 8 GB of RAM and a 500-gigabyte hard drive from Toshiba are powerful components which make the Satchbook enough steam for all office applications, VirtualBox and Co.. YouTube videos at 1080p and 1080p streams with the lure Satchbook also not out of the reserve, even the resource-hungry Adobe Flash is playing the high-resolution videos from seamless. Who needs more power, which can be equipped with a Core i7 the Satchbook or even an SSD, so that an “extra” power is no longer really possible. However, the price rises will also add up to almost € 1640.

The casual gamer is the “absence” of a dedicated graphics card from Nvidia or ATI do not really notice that I played in 3D games ran without problems. Although I must admit that I'm not a player and thus have no great demands. The matte 15.6-inch screen of the device has a resolution of 1366 × 768 pixels and is bright enough to be able to work in order to direct sunlight, but it would need a bit more shiny. Add to that a battery is 5200 mAh, for which the Satchbook with continuous operation with Office Web surfing and could provide little more than five hours of power.

Linux compatibility of the device is also given. Thus rocking can not deliver a “optimized” system, I booted from an Ubuntu Natty Satchbook the Desktop CD. Everything, absolutely everything, worked outofthebox under the Live-CD. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, card reader, webcam, sound, media keys, etc., directly from the CD did their duty. Ouch so things like plugging and unplugging of headphones brought the Satchbook not out of the trap to fail current notebook here like if the ALSA integrated chipsets can not detect properly.

Back in the rocking of

Aufgestetzen and look slightly refreshed Ubuntu did then suspend to ram their service. Even after repeated waking from sleep, I could not notice any problems. From the perspective of a Linux, it is therefore very gratifying to be able to buy a device that is guaranteed to work under Linux.

Where there is light falls, but also shade. And this to me personally a little darkened the fun Satchbook. Rocking writes about the Satchbook himself: “We wanted a laptop that the MacBooks and XPSs shows where the hammer hangs – equal hardware with a superior operating system,” this statement I assume – together with the not inconsiderable price of at least 789 € – to scale for assessment of processing, haptics and ergonomics. I have not a cheap laptop from the remnants ramp in front of me, for 800 € I get numerous high-quality processed devices known brands, the Satchbook should therefore not fear comparison with these models.

Processing, ergonomics and handling

The 2.5-pound case of Satchbooks is not processed cheaply, it rattles and creaks nothing, it also makes one – perhaps too – solid impression. However, there is a far cry from the appearance of an Apple Macbooks removed. It reminds me of an Acer Aspire 5735Z, which I once had in the beginning of the year and the test now is to have around 350 €. I personally would expect from the purchase price a little higher material quality.

Worthy of criticism and the fans are, and especially the keyboard. The fan of Satchbooks always runs, even if the computer does absolutely nothing, you hear the noise of the fan in the background. The bearings of the fan installed in my test unit were also not quite round, so that the operating noise of the fan also overlaid with a slight sawing. At full load the fan was then much too loud, I do not have a measurement laboratory, so I can only describe my subjective impression, but a device in this price range would run more smoothly.

.

A quick note for all who use Gmail and forgo a traditional e-mail client in the style of Thunderbird or Evolution. I had described earlier how you can integrate Gmail better into the GNOME desktop, but unfortunately the programs described therein desktop webmail is still buggy, it still does not appear on the list of favorite applications, so that you must correct this error as before by hand.

As an alternative I have just a small package GNOME Gmail discovered, it does the same thing in effect as webmail desktop, but it does Oneiric without tinkering with Natty and his service. It also puts an icon from the application menu, so you can set Gmail without undue expense in the Dash or the sidebar of the GNOME Shell. The installation is limited to the installation of the package …

$ Sudo apt-get install gnome-gmailSo then white

The GNOME desktop environment, what to do with mailto links, you must still enter in the settings “Gnome Gmail” as the default program for e-mails. The option can be found in Oneiric “System Information” and the “default” applications. In Natty, there is still the traditional dialogue on preferred applications.

Unfortunately, there is also another bug that prevents you from directly out Nautilus can send files as attachments. On my system I only get the message “Unable to Determine IMAP Drafts folder location” as a notification appears. Not bother me personally, because I usually shove attachments via drag and drop them into the window of the e-mail. The context menu of the Nautilus file manager I use it never actually.

Cyrano has pointed me in a comment to the interactive tutorial to a lecture by Vim Bram Moolenaar. Bram is the main developer and driving force behind the powerful editor. The lecture will be presented in detail in almost 1.5 hours Vim, it is true of 2007 and thus get a little dusty, but from THE people behind the program explains in detail Vim is certainly not wasted time.

Is even better perhaps a hint to Derek Wyatt's blog. Derek explains in his flippant way in a sympathetic whole Vim the editor Video Workshop from Alpha to Omega. The videos are really recommended, as Derek explains not only what such works, but it also tells why to do so. I tie the first time one of his dozens of videos at this point. It explains well why it might be a good idea, the know-how to use Vim to acquire.

With a half hour running time is much more compact than the first video presented. You can also directly view the video on Vimeo, where you have the advantage that you can jump on bookmarks directly to the interesting passages for you.

Maybe even a quick tip for those who are about to update their Ubuntu system, or have already gone through this work. Alin Andrei from WebUpd8 blog has its managers PPA Y donated a function that can be especially after upgrading to the new Ubuntu version useful. During the upgrade so any additional repositories be disabled.Who more than just a couple of PPAs in use, has the check must be after the upgrade on each PPA, if this was already prepared for this Oneiric and then re-add the package manager.

The Y

PPA manager can remove a now this work. After the upgrade, you can say about the Advanced button, that all previously disabled PPAs should be re-activated. The program does not do this blindly, but checks whether each PPA for Oneiric actually already available. If the check is positive, then the source will be reactivated and, of course, the current version of Ubuntu right branch entered.

$ Sudo apt-add-repository ppa: webupd8team/y-ppa-manager$ Sudo apt-get update & & sudo apt-get install-y-manager ppa

I personally would function after the upgrade of my computer – on which I added a lot of experimenting too much – can use very well. Go through every single PPA and has activated it by hand back to me already gekostetet an hour. With the new function of the Y that would be guaranteed PPA manager went out of hand quickly.

However, I would

After an upgrade not enable blindly back each PPA, even though it has been prepared for the new version. , An upgrade I would always use the housecleaning at the used PPAs. Eventually, the PPA is not necessary anymore, because the program has been updated directly in the sources of Ubuntu, etc.

It is in my calendar that the distribution already celebrating its seventh birthday! Debian, Redhat and Suse are almost from the beginning of this, Ubuntu actually puts on the other hand still in his diapers.

Nothing

Nevertheless: Happy Birthday

From Warty to Oneiric it was a long way … seven years, 15 versions, many discussions, a huge community, perpetual development. I am curious where the journey the next few years. I compare this time with Ubuntu from that of today, I must say that the comfort and compatibility have grown enormously.

Graphical Installer? Live CDs? That did not exist back then. Webcams? Wi-Fi cards? Many hardware that runs today largely without problems, was then almost did not get to work. As before, there are of course always hurdles to be overcome, but compared to the past but are really just stumbling blocks.

Who are the good old

Warty want to watch again, which can be found on old-releases.ubuntu.com nor the iso images from the early days of Ubuntu. Unfortunately, did not install Warty right away in a current VirtualBox, not without reason that scolds the ugly warty warthog

I am now quite a Friend of GNOME Shell. I'm using it for quite some time, first under Fedora 15, Ubuntu Natty 11:04 then with the PPA and the team just now GNOME3 GNOME 3.2, Ubuntu installed out Oneiric 11:10. However, I now Oneiric frequently the problem described in Bug # 84 481, so that the index misrepresented.There are windows to see who actually does not lie on the current desktop, not all windows are shown completely. Where exactly is the problem is me, unfortunately, not yet known, but it seems users with Nvidia, ATI or Intel graphics also make cards alike.

Once the problem occurs, you get rid of it, unfortunately, not so fast. It disappears only when the GNOME-Shell restarts by itself, for example, logging off and on again. But luckily there's a better way to reload the shell. Pressing Alt + F2 and simply give the “r” or “restart”, then the windows on the screen flicker briefly and the shell should behave properly again.

finds

More tips and tricks on her way GNOME Shell in the gnome-shell cheat sheet. Everyone who plays with the idea to test the shell once, should look at this survey at least once.

The power consumption of devices with the latest chipset from Intel Sandy Bridge is on Ubuntu 11:10 Oneiric far from ideal. The problem lies in the kernel 3.0 and 3.1, this no longer runs the graphic part of the CPU when not in use in the rest RC-6, in which the GPU will need very little energy. The rest of the GPU was disabled intentionally, because we could not exclude that this may not lead to problems around the graphics and the CPU.For more information and background on the topic at Heise about it, so I will spare me further details at this point.

This problem is the power now being substantially upward, various passages speak of 30 to 40% more energy consumption and of course a higher temperature of the CPU, faster spinning fans and louder and thus, logically, shorter battery life. With a couple of kernel parameters can be also the 3.0 kernel from Ubuntu to the CPU Oneiric bring in the desired location and condition RC-6, but then users have reported problems with the graphics output. It therefore remains to consider whether to buy a lottery for all Sandy Bridge Notebooks / Deskops is.

Detailed tests on the individual kernel parameters can be found at Phoronix, the guys have driven several tests and examined the effects of each of the kernel parameters mentioned there on the power consumption as well as performance. However, even Phoronix not say which models have problems with the graphics tweaks and what not, therefore, of leaving it to you all the test itself.

Updates that will fix the crashes of the Nautilus file manager in connection with extensions nautilus-open-terminal and Ubuntu One, have been published so now. The crashes should now be history. Anyone still looking for an alternative to nautilus-open-terminal, should look at maybe Nautilus Terminal.The expansion brings a terminal directly to the file manager, version 1.0, the extension now understands even with Nautilus 3.x, so that they can use in Ubuntu Oneiric 11:10.

View

The installation of the extension can be done directly from the developer of the PPA. Integrate the triple jump from the usual source, read and re-sources package in Ubuntu install brings one to the goal. Finally, it must be restarted from scratch Nautilus.

$ Sudo apt-add-repository ppa: Flozz / Flozz$ Sudo apt-get update$ Sudo apt-get install gnome-terminal$ Killall nautilus

Then appears automatically when you start the file manager, a terminal at the top of the application window. About the “handle” files between the terminal and the terminal can enlarge or reduce it just too completely, so that one no longer sees it. Alternatively, you can also the terminal with “F4″ and show them again. Furthermore, you can drag files from the file manager into the terminal, so that the path of the file is copied and copy content with Ctrl + Shift + C or Ctrl + Shift + V or paste again.

Should you want to customize the terminal permanently, so that you can about the configuration file ~ /. make nautilus-terminal. The file does not by nature, so you must invest them with an editor …

$ Gedit ~ /. Gnome-terminal

… and then for example Insert these lines. About them you can determine the height of the terminal area, specify the location of the terminal and also say whether the terminal building should be made visible. Optionally you can also specify that a different shell to use.

123456789101112[General]# The terminal height (lines)def_term_height = 5# The default visibility in new terminal windows? (1: Visible, 0 Hidden)def_visible = 1# The terminal position (1: top, 0: Bottom)# NOTE: it's not recommended to put the terminal on the bottomterm_on_top = 1[Terminal]# The shell to use (use the user's terminal nautilus shell defined by default)shell = / bin / bash[General]# The terminal heightdef_term_height = 5# The default visibility in new terminal windows?def_visible = 1# The terminal position# NOTE: it's not recommended to put the terminal on the bottomterm_on_top = 1[Terminal]# The shell to useshell = / bin / bash

Terminal Nautilus is certainly a great addition to the file manager. I have the extension set with me so that I it is hidden by nature, and only becomes visible, press F4. So I'm always a terminal with the current folder at hand, without that I must patch up the desktop with terminal windows.
